Who is India's best opener after Gavaskar? Ravi Shastri said

Former India bowling coach Bharat Irwin has revealed that Ravi Shastri considers Murali Vijay to be India's best Test opener after Sunil Gavaskar.

The Chennai-born cricketer made his Test debut in 2008 against Australia. He has so far represented the national team in 61 Test matches and has scored 3,982 runs at an average of 38.28. He used to be the team's first choice in his early years.

Vijay played his last Test against Australia in Perth in 2018. Shastri's words were seen as quite high praise for Vijay as many other great openers in India emerged after Gavaskar's retirement.

Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir have opened for the Indian team, with their best averages of 49.34, 44.82 and 41.95 respectively, much higher than Vijay.

Nevertheless, the former coach of the Indian team threw his weight behind Murali Vijay whom he had seen playing cricket from a young age.

Bharat Irwin said, “I had seen Murali Vijay in college and recommended him to the first division team.”

He said that Ravi Shastri has often said that Murali Vijay is India's best Test opener after Sunil Gavaskar. And that's a huge compliment. He is one of my favorite players.
