What changes with the merger with Crunchyroll?


Yes, Crunchyroll will definitely replace Funimation in Brazil. The platform streaming in anime will officially end its services in Brazil on April 2, 2024 and its catalog is already being transferred to Crunchyroll.

Starting next season, new episodes and anime will be released exclusively on Crunchyroll. Funimation will only continue to add chapters of previously announced series. Catalog transfer began in March 2022.

With the merger, starting in April 2024, Funimation will cease to exist and its members will be transferred to Crunchyroll. The two anime streaming platforms were already very similar. Crunchyroll has been in Brazil since 2012, while Funimation only arrived in 2020.

Funimation was discontinued in Brazil in July 2023. The Funimation app and website are no longer in service in Brazil as of July 31, 2023. Funimation subscribers are directed to Crunchyroll.

Funimation's merger with Crunchyroll took place in March 2022 and created a unique brand to serve anime fans around the world. The merger included Funimation subsidiary Wakanim and Crunchyroll's VRV.

In August 2021, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the completion of the purchase of Crunchyroll for US$1.175 billion. The acquisition was first revealed in December 2020.

Sony now owns the rights to three companies specializing in anime, including Aniplex, which produces, and Funimation, which broadcasts. Sony Pictures Entertainment, the parent company of Funimation, was in talks to acquire Crunchyroll from WarnerMedia for $1.5 billion and did so on August 12, 2020. According to Variety, the amount was reduced to $ 1 billion.

After the merger, Funimation only received new episodes of works already in progress. Anime queues and viewing histories will also be saved on the orange platform. Funimation was an American entertainment company that specialized in the distribution and dubbing of East Asian media, primarily Japanese anime.

Crunchyroll offers a free plan with ads in the programming, while Funimation did not have a free plan (it had a monthly subscription plan of R$24.90 and an equivalent annual plan). The merger will bring some changes for subscribers:

  • Funimation subscribers can migrate their accounts to Crunchyroll or merge existing profiles on both platforms
  • Subscription plan prices will not change
  • Funimation will delete digital purchases from users who had access to content “forever”
  • Funimation series queue and history will not be available on Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll has subscription plans from R$14.99, with monthly and annual plans. All plans offer unlimited access to all content platform, including anime and manga. Crunchyroll also airs new episodes right after they air in Japan. Additionally, it also offers a 14-day free trial, during which users can watch anime without ads.

To subscribe to Crunchyroll, simply access the streaming subscriptions page, choose your preferred plan and create an account. Then, simply fill in the payment method, which can be either by credit card or via Paypal.

Crunchyroll is now the largest anime platform in the world, with a unified catalog that includes content from Funimation and its subsidiaries.

Crunchyroll, in addition to being a streaming service focused on Japanese anime and cartoons, is an American distribution, publishing and licensing company, and an international online community. It has more than a thousand series in its catalog and is always investing in new titles.

In October 2023, the Amazon also announced a partnership with Crunchyroll. The agreement allows the anime catalog to be offered as part of Prime Video channels for an additional cost. For now, it is only available in the US, Canada, Sweden and the UK. For other countries, Amazon stated that the plan will arrive in 2024.
