Warning issued to beggars in Dubai

In a warning to beggars in Dubai ahead of Ramadan, the police said in no uncertain terms that beggars caught could face heavy penalties.

According to the Arab media report, the Dubai Police started a campaign against beggars before Ramadan.

Dubai authorities say that those who beg will be fined at least 5,000 dirhams and imprisoned for up to 3 months, while those who call people from abroad to beg can be fined up to 100,000 dirhams and imprisoned for 6 months.

Dubai Police says the department is doing its best to curb the practice of begging, with more than 1,700 beggars arrested in the past four years.
