The former president of Panama was out of the election

Former Panamanian President Martinelli was barred from the elections.

According to international media reports, the Electoral Tribunal of Panama has annulled the candidacy of former President Ricardo Martinelli in the May presidential elections.

The decision comes a month after the former leader lost a bid to avoid jail time on corruption charges and sought asylum in the Nicaraguan embassy.

After the tribunal's decision, former President Martinelli's hopes of becoming president again have been dashed.

Martinelli served as president from 2009 to 2014. Last year he was convicted of using stolen public money to buy shares in a publishing house. The 71-year-old supermarket tycoon was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison and fined $19 million.

Last month, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against his sentence. Martinelli to remove the decision from the presidential race "”Last minute illegal action” has been declared.
