Smith overtook former legend Mark Waugh to claim the Test record

Steve Smith, who has taken over as Australia's new opener in Test matches, has overtaken former legendary cricketer Mark Waugh.

Smith became the second most prolific fielder for Australia in Test cricket, surpassing Mark Waugh in catches. The famous Australian opener for taking a catch in the slip once again entered his name in the record books.

During the ongoing Test match against New Zealand in Wellington, Smith showed his exceptional fielding skills by taking two crucial catches.

He took a catch to dismiss Will Young off Travis Head and became Australia's second-highest Test wicket-taker behind Mark Waugh.

Earlier, Smith also took a fine catch of Kane Williamson off Nathan Lyon during his presence in the league slip.

Steve Smith is one of Australia's most reliable fielders. He has taken 182 catches so far in 108 Test matches while showing excellent fielding.

Former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting is ahead of him who holds the record for most catches by the country with 196 catches in 168 Test matches.

Among the players (non-wicket keeper) who have taken the most catches for Australia in Test cricket, Ricky Ponting is first, Steve Smith is second and Mark Waugh is third with 181 catches in 128 Tests.

Apart from this, Mark Taylor led the batsmen by taking 157 catches in 104 Tests while Alan Border proved to be the better fielder by taking 156 catches in 156 Test matches.
